  17. <p>    Sandwiched in the Indian Ocean channel between Mozambique
  18. and Madagascar, the Comoro Islands (pop. 500,000) are known, if
  19. at all, for vanilla, cloves, ilang-ilang (an exotic flower used
  20. to make perfume) -- and occasionally political drama. Last week,
  21. after surviving three coup attempts during this decade alone,
  22. longtime President Ahmed Abdallah, 70, was assassinated in his
  23. palace.

  25. <p>    The leading suspect is a Frenchman, Robert Denard, 62, head
  26. of a group of about 30 mercenaries who command the 500-member
  27. presidential guard. According to French press reports, Denard,
  28. desperate to foil Abdallah's plan to integrate the guard into
  29. the regular army, visited the palace with his deputy to persuade
  30. the President to change his mind. After the meeting turned
  31. violent, Denard or his deputy apparently shot Abdallah and then
  32. tried to frame a former army commander.
